Rodney LeBlanc, Owner Did you know that new compliancy laws require
that you have a written plan updated each year? Now each state has a law about data security on
their books that everyone has to comply with. If you are in healthcare then
you have HIPAA compliancy. Last month for the first time ever, fines were
levied by the federal government over a HIPAA violation. "The health care industry's toothless tiger finally bared its teeth,
as the US Department of Health and Human Services issued a $4.3M fine to a
Maryland health care provider for violations of the HIPAA
Privacy Rule. The action is the first monetary fine issued since the Act was
passed in 1996. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a
Notice of Final Determination to Cignet Health care of Temple Hills, Maryland
on February 4. The notice followed a finding by HHS's Office of Civil Rights
that Cignet failed to provide 41 patients with copies of their medical
records and for failing to respond to requests from HHS's Office of Civil
Rights for information related to the complaints." HIPAA is only not the only security law. Massachusetts and Connecticut now have laws that
state you must protect citizens’ information if you store it on your network.
Most of our clients have this information on their networks and need to take
steps to protect it. Because laws and rules change frequently, we feel it is
our job to keep you informed about them and find ways that we can assist you
in being compliant. If you are concerned about your data, and it’s been a
while since your last Disaster Recovery plan, give us a call or email
Scheduler@rklcom.com. We’ll be happy
to help you learn how to protect your
business. Ian Apruzzese RKL Service Manager Symantec Certificate Expiration Notice LiveUpdate Certificate Expiration Notice As of April 30, 2011, Symantec will have reached
the end of the validity period for the digital certificate initially
associated with the LiveUpdate feature in some of Symantec’s products. Many
of Symantec’s products were patched some time ago so that the LiveUpdate
process will continue to receive updates. However some Symantec products will
no longer receive updates due to this issue, and action is required to
continue to receive updates for these products. What’s this mean to you? You don’t have to take any action at all. In the
coming weeks we will be evaluating all of our clients to ensure you are up to
date and protected. If we find that an update to your Symantec product is
necessary we will be in contact with you to discuss the process. For the majority of you no action is required, but I want to make you aware of this change by
Symantec and that we have you covered. Last month’s trivia
